چکیده

This paper investigates the task of noun compound interpretation, building on the sense collocation approach proposed by Moldovan et al. (2004). Our primary task is to evaluate the impact of similar words on the sense collocation method, and decrease the sensitivity of the classifiers by expanding the range of sense collocations via different semantic relations. Our method combines hypernyms, hyponyms and sister words of the component nouns, based on WordNet. The data used in our experiments was taken from the nominal pair interpretation task of SEMEVAL-2007 (4th International Workshop on Semantic Evaluation 2007). In the evaluation, we test 7-way and 2-way class data, and show that the inclusion of hypernyms improves the performance of the sense collocation method, while the inclusion of hyponym and sister word information leads to a deterioration in performance.

Lexical and Grammatical Collocations in Writing Production of EFL Learners

Lewis (1993) recognized significance of word combinations including collocations by presenting lexical approach. Because of the crucial role of collocation in vocabulary acquisition, this research set out to evaluate the rate of collocations in Iranian EFL learners' writing production across L1 and L2. In addition, L1 interference with L2 collocational use in the learner' writing samples was st...

Interpreting Noun Compounds using Bootstrapping and Sense Collocation

This paper describes a bootstrapping method for automatically tagging noun compounds with their corresponding semantic relations. Our work takes advantage of the collocation of senses of the noun compound constituents and also word similarity. We exploit this to generate a set of noun compounds from a set of previously tagged noun compounds by replacing one constituent of each noun compound wit...

Discriminative Ability of WordNet Senses on the Task of Detecting Lexical Functions in Spanish Verb Noun Collocations

Collocations, or restricted lexical co-occurrence, are a difficult issue in natural language processing because their semantics cannot be derived from the semantics of their constituents. Therefore, such verb-noun combinations as “take a break,” “catch a bus,” “have lunch” can be interpreted incorrectly by automatic semantic analysis. Since collocations are combinations frequently used in texts...

Identification of Noun-Noun (N-N) Collocations as Multi-Word Expressions in Bengali Corpus

Noun-Noun compounds, as a subset of Compound Nouns as well as Nominal Compounds play an important role in NLP applications like Machine Translation, Information Retrieval because of the token frequency, type frequency and their occurrence in the world’s languages. Recognition of MWEs requires deep or shallow syntactic preprocessing tools and large corpora. The problem is quite difficult in Beng...

Kim, Su Nam and Timothy Baldwin (to appear) Word Sense Disambiguation and Noun Compounds, ACM Transactions on Speech and Language Processing

In this paper, we investigate word sense distributions in noun compounds (NCs). Our primary goal is to disambiguate the word sense of component words in NCs, based on investigation of “semantic collocation” between them. We use sense collocation and lexical substitution to build supervised and unsupervised word sense disambiguation (WSD) classifiers, and show our unsupervised learner to be supe...
